Silver maple8/5/2023 This plant will flourish and fill the landscape with its exotic fall foliage. They have also exhibited drought tolerance. Generally, the tree grows in moist locations, but it can also tolerate dry and sandy soil conditions. The shade trees are a common component of the bottomland forests, and they are mostly found on floodplains and stream banks. The fast-growing trees perform best in well-drained soils. This color ranges from green-yellow brown to yellow to brown. The exotic fall color of the leaves of these trees captures the most attention. This bark looks smoother when it's a seedling and eventually changes its texture, becoming sturdier and more robust. But, the bark attains a dark ashy color when it gets older. When the tree is young, it has a soft light-gray bark. The flowers mature entirely in the late spring or at the start of the summer. In the early spring, you'll notice the tiny flowers on these shade trees, usually red The flower buds often occur as visible clumps. The buds of the trees are dark reddish-purple to bright red. The crown of these trees is rounded or oval. However, the winter twigs appear much more slender, and they give off a beautiful red-brown or dull red color that balances off the shimmering appearance of these fast-growing trees. Thus, whenever there is a gentle breeze, one can notice this gleaming silvery-white appearance from far. The pale yellow under-surface of the leaves shines. This glossy touch appears to be quite exhilarating for the eyes. The color of the leaves is bright green on top, while the lower surface is white, almost silvery in color. The leaves of this 80 feet tall tree consist of five lobes, all embedded deep. The tree can grow 4-6 feet in height each year. This tree is also known as silver maple Acer saccharinum and is renowned for its rapid growth. It typically grows to 50’ tall by 40-50’ wide and is distinguished from the species by having (a) stronger upright branching, (b) a more dominant central leader, (c) seedless to almost seedless habit, (d) better bright green summer foliage and (e) better yellow fall color. The silver maple tree is a native tree to Iowa, and it is one of the fastest-growing trees all across the world. ‘Silver Queen’ is a variety that was introduced into commerce in 1966. Specific epithet means sugary in reference to the sweet sap. Genus name is the Latin name for a maple tree. Tree sap is sweet, hence the species name which comes from the Latin word for sugar, but syrups made therefrom are greatly inferior to those made from sugar maple ( Acer saccharum). Deeply 5-lobed light green leaves (to 6” across) have silvery undersides. Mature tree trunks and limbs develop a shaggy appearance as the bark develops long thin flaky scales that exfoliate at the ends. Flowers give way to paired samaras (to 2” long) that mature in late spring. Polygamous greenish yellow flowers bloom in clusters in early spring (March) before the foliage. It is a fast-growing, somewhat graceful tree that formerly was a very popular urban landscape selection for lawns and streets, but has more recently fallen somewhat out of favor because of the proclivity of its weak-wooded limbs to split when stressed by high winds or ice/snow. It is native to eastern and central North America where it typically occurs in moist to wet, sometimes mucky, often poorly drained soils on floodplains, along the edges of streams and rivers and in low woods. This is one of the largest deciduous trees native to Missouri, typically growing to 50-80’ (less frequently to 100’) tall with a rounded open spreading crown. Acer saccharinum commonly known as silver maple gets its name from the silvery undersides of its leaves.
